Ghana is bounded on the north and northwest by Burkina Faso, on the east by Togo, on the south by the Atlantic Ocean, and on the west by Côte d’Ivoire. Formerly a British colony known as the Gold Coast, Ghana became, in 1957, the first black nation in sub-Saharan Africa to achieve independence.  The country is named for the ancient empire of Ghana, from which the ancestors of the inhabitants of the present country are thought to have migrated.

Akwatia is a town in the Eastern region of Ghana, west of the Atewa Range in the Birim River basin.  Akwatia has a population of approximately 40,000.  It is the main center of diamond extraction in the country. It is one of the most densely populated and a fast growing town in the vicinity of the mines.  The town in one of the oldest traditional towns in the Akyem traditional area and does not depend directly on the diamond mining industry.
